Bridge the Gap Between You & A Smile You Love

Dental bridges (also known as fixed bridges or fixed dental prostheses) are dental restorations that can effectively replace 1 or more missing teeth. They are placed over gums with no natural teeth and are typically made of an artificial tooth fused between 2 crowns. The bridge is held in place by your natural teeth or dental implants.

How Are Bridges Done?

If you need a bridge to replace a missing tooth (or teeth), your dentist will follow a few specific steps to fit you with the prosthesis.

First, your dentist files down the 2 teeth surrounding the missing tooth to prepare them for the bridge. If you do not have healthy teeth to attach the bridge to, you may need to have dental implants surgically placed. The teeth or implants act as anchors to hold the bridge in place.

Your dentist then makes a model of your teeth by making impressions (or moulds) using a special dental putty. This mould is used to custom-make the bridge. The bridge consists of 2 crowns that fit over the implants or natural teeth and an artificial tooth in the middle as one solid piece.

Your dentist then places a temporary bridge over the missing tooth to protect the exposed teeth and gums while your custom bridge is being made.

Once your custom-made bridge is complete, your dentist removes the temporary bridge and replaces it with the custom one.

Types of Dental Bridges

Depending on your current situation, oral health, your dentist may recommend one type of bridge over another. There are 4 types of dental bridges: traditional bridges, ‘cantilever bridges, implant bridges, and resin-bonded bridges.

We use CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) to create your dental restorations in-office. This system allows us to connect you with your custom-made restorations quicker than mailing them off to a lab. Plus, we use VITA Easyshade to help us find a match for your natural tooth colour.

Traditional Bridges

Traditional bridges are used when you have 2 natural teeth beside the missing tooth to attach the bridge to. The natural teeth are filed down to fit the bridge over the top, a single piece with 2 crowns fused with an artificial tooth in the middle.

As the name suggests, implant bridges involve surgically placing 2 implants on either side of the missing tooth to attach the bridge to. The bridge is anchored to the implants to keep it in place. If you have multiple missing teeth, an implant bridge may be a good option, but your dentist will let you know if implants are right for you.

Resin-bonded, or “Maryland” bridges, are appropriate for replacing missing teeth at the front of the mouth. Resin-bonded bridges involve artificial teeth fused to metal bands and cemented to the back of your natural teeth.

Cantilever bridges attach to only one adjacent tooth and are a good option for individuals with healthy teeth on only 1 side of the missing tooth.
